‘WEAVING THRU THE WORLD’ WORLD OF COLOUR

Production Company: VANDAL

Client: World Square

Produced by: Ciara Hehir

Format: Woven Sustainable Tapestry and Decal Placemaking project

VANDAL was commissioned by World Square to inject a vibrant burst of colour to the retail precinct in the form of an impressive art, sculpture and placemaking activation.

The brief was to create bold, bright and unique artworks to overtake each entrance and laneway at World Square, enticing passers by into the precinct to explore the dynamic mix of over 100 stores. Aiming to reinvigorate the retail environment with colour splashes and grammable moments that create surprise and delight around every corner, enticing shoppers and passers by in.

The decal designs were led by VANDAL Creative Director Richard Swan and Designer Kurtis Richmond who curated an artistic link between all World Square entry points, defining each with its own graphic language and colours; part placemaking, part wayfinding.”

A highlight of the project is the Spanish Steps on George Street. Residing high above the vibrant colours and geometric patterns of the coloured bench seats now lives a bold bespoke statement tapestry sculpture by VANDAL artist Gabrielle Filtz, titled ‘Weaving Thru the World’.”

Spanning an impressive 26 m², the sustainable sculptural artwork is made from thousands of recycled fabric pieces, individually woven and wrapped together by hand.

The recycled materials used in the artwork consist of discarded fabrics, ribbons and rope from old City of Sydney street banners, festivals and flags, including Mardi Gras festivals. Collected from Reverse Garbage, the discarded materials are used to create public art, rather than ending up in landfill.
